Beacon Residents At Risk of Being Shut Out of the Beacon High School Pool - Please Help Spread the Word!
Dear River Pool,
I live in Beacon and I have been a supporter of River Pool now for a few years. River Pool has made me love the Hudson River so much more and has made me want to be a better steward of it. I swam in the last three River Swims and raised money. I'm not the most athletic person in the world, so I needed to train for the River Swim. I did this at the pool at Beacon High School, and I know of at least two other River Swim-mers who practiced there too. It's a really nice indoor 25-yard pool.
We are having a problem at the pool at Beacon High School, which is that the Board of Ed. says that we must get another 160 members to join the pool otherwise they will not allow Beacon residents to swim there anymore. (When they raised the bond to build the high school, they promised that Beacon city school district residents could join the pool for a small membership fee and use the pool during off-hours.) Joining the high school pool is a wonderful and low-cost opportunity, but unfortunately it has never been advertised and most people don't even know it's an option.
I was wondering if you folks at River Pool would be willing to send an email to your members letting them know about how they can join the high school pool? I figure they are a group of people who are interested in swimming and helping our area. The Board of Ed is going to to consider the option of allowing non-district-residents to join the pool too. The existing members of the pool are really trying to do everything we can to get the word out to people. As you already know, there are so few inexpensive, healthy recreational options for people who live in this community, and if we lose this one, I don't think we are ever going to get it back. If you are interested in passing information on to your members, I can give you all the details about joining the pool.
Thanks a lot,
Nora Olsen
